Andreev Advances On Home Soil

POSTED: 12:50 pm PDT October 6, 2008

(Sports Network) - Second-seeded Russian Igor Andreev highlighted Monday's opening-round winners at the $1.049 million ATP Kremlin Cup.

Andreev won the first set, 6-2, against Yen-Hsun Lu when his counterpart from Taipei retired with a right ankle injury on the indoor carpet at Olympic Stadium. Andreev titled here three years ago.

The Moscow native and resident Andreev will face Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in the round of 16.

In other Day-1 play, Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez leveled France's Nicolas Devilder 6-2, 6-4, while French veteran Fabrice Santoro overcame wild card Yuri Schukin of Kazakhstan 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 and Chardy outlasted Italian Potito Starace 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

This week's top seed is three-time Moscow titlist Nikolay Davydenko. The Russian star has won the last two titles here, including a victory over Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu in last year's Kremlin Cup finale.

The 2008 Moscow champ will collect $171,000.
