Instead of moving to close down hundreds of post offices around the nation, the U.S. Postal Service announced plans today to limit the hours of operation of post offices in order to save money in the future.

"The plan would keep the existing Post Office in place, but with modified retail window hours to match customer use," the Postal Service explained, hoping this would dull opposition in the Congress to plans to cut costs.

But the initial reaction was caution from lawmakers like Sen. Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, who said he was very "concerned about Postal Service's constantly shifting plans and lack of information."

The list of post offices that will see reduced hours was mammoth - 260 pages in all, covering all parts of the state and nation.

"We’ve listened to our customers in rural America and we’ve heard them loud and clear – they want to keep their Post Office open," said Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe.

Donahoe says the plan will be implemented over the next two years, so it wasn't immediately clear when the new hours would begin at these hundreds of postal facilities.
